Giuseppe Battocchi and La Taverna

Originally from Como, Giuseppe Battocchi – known as Peppino – worked for a while at the Goring Hotel in Belgravia, before opening the La Taverna restaurant in Windsor in 1962, not far from the Castle.* In 1969 he opened a second restaurant, Don Peppino, nearby. In 1989 he was getting tired of working and had lost interest in innovation: he felt he had done his bit for his home country, and it was time to take a rest. But Peppino, who has a rather aristocratic habit of pronouncing his Rs the French way, is, despite himself, very attached to his profession, and passionate too about Italian food and drink. He already knew about Carpenè Malvolti, and asked to know more about Prosecco. In the end he couldn’t stop himself from taking on new commitments to promote the wine in his restaurant. Being led by some involuntary force has been the story of his life: he came to England at the end of the 1950s to stay six months and learn the language. For reasons he can’t explain, he ended up staying on, and had the most varied experiences – but he’s always felt as if he’s in Britain just temporarily. Now he feels as if the restaurant has him captive. He’s not at ease, and keeps worrying about the customers, and serving them with great attentiveness. It’s a kind of illness, as he’s well aware, and one for which it’s difficult to find a cure. He himself says with a melancholy air: “Look at me – I’m still doing what I was doing sixty years ago – and what I was going to give up doing after six months!”
